A simple way to decide what to do next.
1Water dropping faster than usual?Do the bucket test rather than guessing from weather or splash-out.

2After 24 hours, did the pool and bucket drop about the same?If yes, evaporation is the likely cause. Keep watching it.
↓
3Did the pool drop noticeably more than the bucket?That is a good reason to suspect a leak and schedule leak detection.
↓
4Want another clue?Repeat the test once with the pump running and once with it off. A change in water loss can help the technician narrow the problem.
HOW TO DO A BUCKET TEST
One bucket. One grease crayon. Twenty-four hours.
A grease crayon or wax pencil works well because the marks stay visible when wet and wipe off later.
- Fill a 5-gallon bucket with pool water and set it on a pool step so it stays partly submerged.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket with a grease crayon.
- Mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket at the same time.
- Turn off the autofill if you have one, and avoid swimming or splashing during the test.
- Wait about 24 hours, then compare the two marks.
- If the pool dropped more than the bucket, you may have a leak.
